Do the citation counts only include US patents or international patents?
The citation counts include patents from USPTO, EPO and WIPO.
Can I use citation map to show relationship among a set of patents I input myself?
Yes. Go to "Advanced Search" -> Click "Citation Analysis" tab -> Input a list of patent numbers (one patent per line) -> click "Analyze"-> Click "Citation Map" tab. the citation map will show up.
How do I interpret the boxes and lines in a citation map?
One box represents one patent. The vertical line (which looks like a tail) represents the patent filing date. The left vertical line of the rectangcle box represents the issue date. The small number at the left end of the box is the number of backforward citations of the patent and the number at the right end is the number of forward citations.
A patent has 21 forward citations, but the map only shows 15. Why is that?
That is because a small set of the patents are not in our database yet. We apologize for the inconvenience and we are adding more patent databases soon.
Can I highlight some patents?
Sure. You can first choose how you want to group the patents (by inventor, assignee or classification), then you can use different colours to highlight different groups of patents.
How do I zoom in to inspect a patent?
Double-click on the patent box. The rest of the patents will disappear and the target patent will be displayed at the center of the page.
How can I find the backward and forward citations of a patent?
Double-click the patent box twice. All the backward and forward citations will show up. You can click on those backward and forward citations to navigate along the tree.
How is the location of a patent determined?
We get the address of the patent assignee and plot it onto google map.
How do I zoom in to find one patent?
The filters below the map can help you. For example, you can click on an assignee name such as "3M Innovative properties company", we will find the 3 patents by the company and locate it on the map.
Click on the orange color balloon, you will see the details of the patents.
