Most AI patent tools do one stage of the work well and nothing either side of it. That is fine until the output of one stage has to become the input of the next, which is where most teams lose their afternoon.

Search

The IP search agents are Novelty Search, FTO Search and Design FTO Search. XLSCOUT: a module suite across search, drafting and licensing

XLSCOUT is a Toronto-headquartered platform organised as named modules rather than one workspace, covering prior art and invalidity search, automated drafting, claim charts and evidence-of-use work aimed at licensing, plus portfolio and competitor tracking.7, 8 It describes itself as an SOC 2 Type II certified platform and states that it does not use customer data to train its models.9 Pricing is quote-only.

DeepIP: drafting and prosecution inside Microsoft Word

DeepIP is an AI assistant that runs inside Microsoft Word, covering drafting, claims review and office action response, with prior art, freedom-to-operate and invalidity search alongside.10 Its reviewer checks claims for antecedent basis and dependency problems and flags eligibility language.11 It names the patent offices it supports, from the USPTO and EPO through CNIPA, JPO and KIPO, and states that it does not retain client data or use it for model training.12 Pricing is not published.

Patent Bots: pre-filing quality control and claim charts

Patent Bots is a Word add-in for Windows and Mac aimed at pre-filing quality control. It checks claims for numbering, dependency, antecedent basis and support problems, generates claim charts that can be used for infringement or invalidity work, and publishes examiner statistics built from USPTO data.13, 14 It is USPTO-focused throughout, states that customer data is not used for AI model training, and publishes per-seat pricing.15

ClaimMaster: local claims checking with your own model

ClaimMaster is a Microsoft Word add-in that runs locally on your own machine, built around claims quality control: antecedent basis, claim dependencies, claim support in the specification, claim trees and claim charts.16 Its drafting layer works on a bring-your-own-model basis, connecting to your own hosted or locally running LLMs rather than a vendor-operated service, which is the confidentiality argument it leans on.17 It is USPTO-centric, and publishes tier names and a 30-day trial though not dollar figures.18

Ambercite: citation networks instead of keywords

Ambercite takes a different route to prior art. Instead of describing the invention, you give it one or more known patents, and it applies citation-network analytics to surface documents that keyword and semantic searches miss.19 That makes it a complement rather than a substitute, most useful as a second pass once a conventional search has produced solid hits. Pricing is quote-based and the free trial is tightly capped.20

Patentfield: semantic, image and generative AI in one platform

Patentfield is a Kyoto-based platform that combines semantic search, AI image search over patent drawings, conventional Boolean search and a generative AI layer for review and analysis, with AI-assisted classification and citation-chain visualisation on the analytics side.21 Coverage spans the JP, US, EP, CN, KR, TW and WO collections. It is the most price-transparent option here, publishing a free plan alongside its paid tiers.22

Espacenet: the free reference point for families and legal status

Espacenet is the European Patent Office’s free service and the standard reference point for family and legal status work, offering more than 150 million patent documents from more than 100 patent authorities.23 Its AI element is narrow and clearly labelled: a CPC text categoriser that suggests classification symbols from a natural language description of a technology.24 What makes it hard to replace is structural rather than intelligent, namely simple and INPADOC extended family views alongside legal event data, at no cost.25

WIPO PATENTSCOPE: free, multilingual, and now AI-assisted

PATENTSCOPE is WIPO’s free service, indexing 128.8 million patent documents across 123 national and regional collections, with cross-lingual expansion across 14 languages that matters when the closest art is not in English.26 In July 2026 WIPO added an AI assistant that turns natural language into structured queries and states that the language model is hosted on WIPO premises.27 It is the free baseline any paid tool should be measured against.

What no AI patent tool settles

  • No search proves a negative. Coverage differs by office, by year, by full-text depth and by language. WIPO publishes an office-by-office coverage table precisely because coverage is uneven. A search establishes what was found under a documented scope.
  • Published accuracy figures are self-reported. None of these tools has been through an independent head-to-head evaluation, and several vendors qualify their own figures in their terms of service.
  • Claim charts are evidence, not conclusions. A mapping from a claim element to a passage is a starting point for a legal argument, not the argument itself.
  • AI output needs professional review. Every vendor in this category says so in its terms, and any filing, clearance or publication decision should be reviewed by qualified counsel before it is acted on.

The better-documented vendors say no in writing, and the wording differs in ways worth reading. Patsnap states no AI training on user data and publishes SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR and CCPA compliance. DeepIP states it does not retain client data nor use it for model training and lists ISO 42001, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II. XLSCOUT states it does not use customer data to train its models. Patent Bots states customer data is not used for any AI model training. ClaimMaster sidesteps the question differently by running locally and letting you point it at your own model. Absence of such a statement is not a guarantee.
Can AI do a freedom-to-operate search?
Some tools do, and fewer than the marketing implies.
