How to Review Patent Value Signals with AI

Patent valuation · MCP tutorial

Review patent value signals with AI with Patent Valuation Scorecard, a patent valuation tool that scores a patent across legal, strategic, market, economic, and technology dimensions from a single publication number.

This workflow works in Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, or Codex when the selected client supports the required MCP connection. After connecting, the research steps and evidence boundaries are the same.

Patent researchers often need to assess the commercial and strategic significance of a granted patent or application. A single patent number provides no immediate signal about legal strength, market relevance, or technology maturity — standard desk research means juggling spreadsheets, manual scoring rubrics, and fragmented data sources just to build a preliminary picture.

An AI assistant or coding agent can help structure the assessment question and interpret the results, but it can’t retrieve the underlying scoring data on its own. Patent Valuation Scorecard closes that gap: it brings multi-dimensional value metrics — technology, legal stability, market opportunity, strategic alignment, and commercialization potential — directly into your AI assistant or coding agent through MCP (Model Context Protocol), scored out of 100 so results are directly comparable across a portfolio.

How the score is built

Patent Valuation Scorecard follows an indicator approach: instead of reducing a patent to one number, it scores several observable signals — patent family size, citation counts, legal status, litigation history, and IPC classification among them — and rolls them into five comparable dimensions: legal, strategic, market, economic, and technology. A larger patent family or a heavier citation count typically points to broader market relevance or stronger technical influence, for example, while legal status and litigation history feed the legal dimension.

A generic language model can describe this kind of methodology from training data, but it can’t produce a current score for a specific patent — that requires live indicator data pulled from Patsnap’s patent database, which is what the MCP connection supplies.

What you need before you ask

You need a valid patent or application number in any recognized format — the tool accepts publication numbers from major jurisdictions including EP, US, WO, CN, JP, and KR. For this example the input is EP4721726A1, a European application. No other metadata is required; just confirm the number matches the official publication record before you ask, to avoid a retrieval error.

Choose where to connect
  • Claude: add the remote MCP connection from Claude’s connector or integration settings.
  • Claude Code: add the server as a remote HTTP MCP connection in your user or project configuration.
  • ChatGPT: add the server through the supported connector or developer-mode MCP setup available to your workspace.
  • Codex: add the server in Codex’s MCP configuration for the relevant local workspace.

The interface differs by client, but you use the same Patsnap connection URL and the same natural-language research prompt.

  1. Get a Patsnap Open Platform API key.
  2. Copy the connection URL or JSON config from the Connect panel on the Patent Valuation Scorecard page.
  3. Add the server to your AI assistant or coding agent or another MCP-compatible client.
  4. Restart or reconnect the client, then confirm the valuation tools are available.

Request the scorecard

Get the patent valuation scorecard for EP4721726A1. Show the overall patent value and the score for each dimension.

Claude translates that into valuation(patent_number="EP4721726A1"). The tool submits the number to the Patsnap scoring engine and returns the overall patent value estimate alongside individual dimension scores.

For EP4721726A1, legal and strategic stand out as the comparatively stronger dimensions, while market scores lowest. Each score reflects a composite of underlying indicators in that dimension.

These are research indicators, not appraisals or investment recommendations. Use them to rank portfolio assets, prioritize deeper diligence, or compare acquisition candidates on a consistent basis — not as a substitute for professional valuation.

Go further with follow-up questions

Once you have the initial scorecard, you can Ask your AI assistant or coding agent to:

  • “Which score is highest for EP4721726A1?”
  • “Retrieve the scorecard for another patent in the same family and compare the legal scores.”
  • “What’s the average strategic score if I add two more patents?”

Each question uses the scores already returned. For broader portfolio work, collect scorecards for several assets and Ask your AI assistant or coding agent to rank them by strategic score, flag outliers in the market dimension, or calculate a median technology score across the set.

Frequently asked questions

What do the dimension scores actually measure?

Each dimension — legal, strategic, market, economic, and technology — is a composite score out of 100 built from multiple underlying indicators in that area, letting you compare patents on a consistent basis rather than a single signal.

How is the score actually calculated?

Patent Valuation Scorecard uses an indicator approach, combining signals such as family size, citation counts, legal status, litigation history, and IPC classification into each dimension. The exact weighting behind each score isn’t published, so treat the result as a structured research indicator rather than a disclosed formula.

Is the patent value estimate an appraisal?

No. It’s a research indicator meant for screening and comparison, not a formal appraisal or investment recommendation. Treat a low or high score as a prompt for further diligence, not a final answer.

Can I compare scores across multiple patents?

Yes. Because every score is normalized out of 100, you can request scorecards for several patents in the same session and Ask your AI assistant or coding agent to rank, average, or flag outliers across them directly.

Can Claude generate this scorecard without an MCP connection?

No. An AI assistant or coding agent can help frame the question and interpret the scores, but it has no live connection to the underlying valuation data on its own — Patent Valuation Scorecard supplies that connection through MCP.

Can I use this workflow in Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, or Codex?

Yes, provided the selected client and workspace support the required MCP connection. Connect the same Patsnap server, then use the natural-language steps shown in this guide; interface details may differ by client.
