How to Scan Emerging AI Technologies with AI

Emerging-technology scanning tries to answer a hard question early: which technical direction inside a fast-moving field is genuinely gaining momentum, before it shows up in roadmaps or headlines. Using AI-agent tool-use and computer-use technology as a real, partial worked example, this article explains how the Scan Emerging AI Technologies Skill turns a defined technology question into a reproducible, bounded signal brief instead of a single misleading keyword count.

This focused signal brief asks whether disclosed activity around AI agents for tool use and computer interaction is increasing, and which records deserve closer review. Every comparison uses the same query and application-date rule so the result can be reproduced.

Evidence-based signalDisclosed patent activity increased sharply under the defined query, while the field remains early and unsettled.

Application-year results rose from 48 in 2022 to 2,234 in 2025. This measures disclosed activity under one search definition; it does not establish technical maturity or market adoption.

This brief supports
A reproducible early-signal read: a fixed search basis, an application-year trend, jurisdiction and applicant context, and representative patents and papers worth a closer read.

It does not establish
A completed technology landscape, a ranked list of technology leaders, freedom-to-operate clearance, or proof that any single company or paper defines the field.

Representative evidence: Salesforce, AI agent runtime (granted) · UiPath, tool-building agentic loops · MediaTek, on-device agentic app-calling · Intuit, agentic-flow cost optimization · HPE, agentic tool mesh · Persistent Systems, agentic workflow governance · BEARCUBS (2025) · Build the web for agents (2025).

What emerging-technology scanning should answer

A useful emerging-technology scan tells a technology-scouting or R&D team three things: is activity in a defined technical direction actually accelerating, under what exact query and time window, and which specific records are worth a closer read. It should also say clearly what it has not established, because by definition, an emerging signal is early and still noisy.

AI-agent tool-use and computer-use technology is a good test case. The idea that a large language model can call external tools, APIs, and eventually full computer interfaces to complete multi-step tasks has moved from research demos to shipped products inside a few years. Whether that shift is visible, and how fast, is exactly the kind of question a scan should answer with evidence rather than impression.

Why keyword-only scanning misses real signals or drowns in noise

A single keyword search either returns too little or too much. Searching only “AI agent” returns hundreds of thousands of unrelated hits, robotics agents, insurance agents, multi-agent simulation papers, because the vocabulary is reused across unrelated fields. Searching only a narrow phrase like “computer-use agent” misses the surrounding vocabulary (“tool calling,” “agentic workflow,” “function calling”) that the same technical idea is filed and published under.

Comparing years without keeping the query and date field unchanged is just as unreliable. Many patent applications publish about 18 months after the earliest filing, and indexing can add further delay, so the newest period is usually incomplete.

How the Skill works

The Skill turns a technical direction into a bounded signal brief in four steps, keeping the query and date basis fixed throughout.

1 · FrameDefine the technical direction, adjacent vocabulary, and the date field and review window to keep fixed.
2 · QueryBuild one reusable patent query and run it consistently across time buckets, jurisdictions, and applicants.
3 · Cross-checkPull representative patents and connected literature so a count is never the only evidence.
4 · BoundFlag incomplete recent periods, unresolved entity names, and counts that are activity signals, not conclusions.

What the connected literature adds

Two directly relevant papers surfaced through the same run: “BEARCUBS: A benchmark for computer-using web agents” (Song et al., ArXiv, posted July 2025), which reports that a leading computer-use agent reached 65.8% accuracy on 111 real-world browsing tasks versus 84.7% human accuracy; and “Build the web for agents, not agents for the web” (Lù et al., ArXiv, posted June 2025), a position paper proposing that web interfaces be redesigned for agents rather than retrofitted for them. Both are recent, both are directly on-topic, and both show that the research literature still treats computer-use agents as unsolved rather than mature.

For this partial run, several widely cited earlier papers on LLM tool-augmented reasoning and tool-calling benchmarks from 2023 were not retrievable through the connected literature search. That is a coverage gap in this specific search pass, not evidence that the underlying research does not exist, a broader literature search should close it before this brief is treated as complete.

Prepare, install, and run

Provide the technical direction in your own words, the adjacent vocabulary you already know, the date field to keep fixed (application date is usually more stable than publication date for recent activity), the jurisdictions or applicants you care about, and how the result will be used.

RESEARCH PROMPT
Scan for emerging AI technologies in AI-agent tool-use and computer-use systems, where LLM-driven agents call external tools, APIs, and computer interfaces to complete multi-step tasks. Keep one patent query and application-date window fixed, report jurisdiction and applicant activity under that exact query, flag the current year as an incomplete partial period, pull representative patents and papers for a closer read, and state plainly which signals are early or noisy rather than confirmed.

How to use and verify the result

Use this brief to decide where deeper review is justified: refine the vocabulary, inspect representative claims, verify applicant identities, and compare the patent signal with technical literature and product evidence.

Review next: re-run the same query and inspect near misses, read full claims for any patent that matters to your decision, independently confirm any unfamiliar applicant identity, expand the literature search beyond this run, and treat the current-year bucket as undercounted rather than declining.

Frequently asked questions

Does a jump in patent filings prove a technology has matured?

No. It shows more disclosed activity under one fixed query. Maturity requires product evidence, a claims-level read, and confirmation beyond counts.

Why flag the most recent year as incomplete?

Patent applications typically publish 18 months after filing, and literature indexing lags too, so the newest year in any scan is always undercounted relative to earlier years.

Can this scan tell me which company is winning?

No. Filing volume under one query is one activity signal. It says nothing about product traction, technical depth, or market share without a claims-level and product-level review.
